Should the holding bank default holding bank, the investor becomes a <strong>secured creditor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Account &#8211; unallocated<\/h4>\n<p>An investment account where the client&#8217;s precious metals <strong>have not been specifically identified<\/strong>, and can be lower-priced than an allocated account because some banks do not charge for this storage. The downside is the client carries higher counterparty risk and is an <strong>unsecured creditor<\/strong> should the holding bank default.<\/p>\n<h4>Advance Premium Forward<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>forward contract<\/strong> offering a constant <strong>contango<\/strong> throughout the contract&#8217;s life and is similar to both a flat rate forward and stabilized contango.<\/p>\n<h4>American Option<\/h4>\n<p>An option that can be exercised on <strong>any day<\/strong> up to and inclusive of it&#8217;s expiry date.<\/p>\n<h4>Arbitrage<\/h4>\n<p>Buying and selling a commodity in different markets <strong>at the same time<\/strong> to take advantage of <strong>price differentials<\/strong> between the markets.<\/p>\n<h4>Ask<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>price<\/strong> at which a metals dealer offers to <strong>sell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Assay<\/h4>\n<p>Official and standardized tests to determine the <strong>fineness<\/strong> and <strong>weight<\/strong> of a precious metal.<\/p>\n<h4>Austrian 100 Corona<\/h4>\n<p>A popular <strong>restrike bullion gold coin<\/strong>, with each coin containing .9802 ounce of gold.<br \/>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>B<\/h2>\n<h4>Backwardation<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>difference<\/strong> between a forward price and a nearby price when the nearby <strong>is in excess<\/strong> of the forward.<\/p>\n<h4>Bar<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>physical gold product<\/strong>, either for <strong>trading<\/strong> or for <strong>accumulation<\/strong>. In the precious metals industry, the words bar and ingot are used interchangeably.<\/p>\n<h4>Bear<\/h4>\n<p>An investor who is expecting prices to <strong>fall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Bear Market<\/h4>\n<p>A market seeing an overall <strong>downward trend<\/strong> or where market sentiment predicts a downward trend <\/p>\n<h4>Bid\/Buy<\/h4>\n<p>Bid or buy is the price a dealer is willing to <strong>pay<\/strong> for a precious metal. (Ask or sell is the price <strong>being offered<\/strong> by the seller for the same metal).<\/p>\n<h4>Bonds<\/h4>\n<p>A means for <strong>raising debt<\/strong> through the capital markets. Gold-Backed Bonds are paper debt investments backed by Gold.<\/p>\n<h4>Boston Options<\/h4>\n<p>See <strong>Break forward options<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<h4>BU<\/h4>\n<p>Shorthand for Brilliant Uncirculated, used to describe a coin that&#8217;s in <strong>new condition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Bull<\/h4>\n<p>An investor expecting prices to <strong>rise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Bull Market<\/h4>\n<p>A market where the primary trend is <strong>up<\/strong> and sentiment is for it&#8217;s continued rise.<\/p>\n<h4>Bullion<\/h4>\n<p>Precious metals in the form of <strong>bars<\/strong> of at least <strong>99.5% purity<\/strong>. The word originally meant &#8216;melting place&#8217; or &#8216;mint&#8217; and derives from the French bouillon, meaning boiling. <\/p>\n<h4>Bullion Coin<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>legal tender coin<\/strong> of which the market price is dependent on its <strong>gold content<\/strong>, as opposed to its rarity, design or face value. (The opposite being numismatic coin)<\/p>\n<h4>Boiler Room<\/h4>\n<p>Any business using high pressure sales tactics, false or misleading information, or scare tactics, to coerce an investor to make a purchase. They confirm an investor&#8217;s ownership but the bank retains physical possession of the metal. Advantages for the client are storage fee savings and a <strong>gain in liquidity<\/strong> thanks to being able to sell portions of the holding.<\/p>\n<h4>CFTC<\/h4>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Commodity Futures Trading Commission<\/a><\/strong>, the regulatory body in the US covering futures markets.<\/p>\n<h4>Chameleon<\/h4>\n<p>Brokers or dealers who <strong>change their position<\/strong> on an investment in-line with what they consider <strong>will lead an investor to enter a transaction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Coin<\/h4>\n<p>Any stamped piece of metal (usually of known weight and fineness) issued to enable <strong>commerce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Coin of the Realm<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>legal tender coin<\/strong> issued by a government, for general national circulation.<\/p>\n<h4>Collector Value<\/h4>\n<p>The value of a coin <strong>over and above<\/strong> it&#8217;s intrinsic value (metal content), or face value &#8211; based on rarity and condition.<\/p>\n<h4>COMEX<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>New York Commodity Exchange<\/strong>, now a division of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/company\/nymex.html\" target=\"_blank\">NYMEX<\/a>, the <strong>New York Mercantile Exchange<\/strong>. The contracts in the COMEX gold market consist of 100 ounces each, with actively traded contracts being even months of the year.<\/p>\n<h4>Commemoratives<\/h4>\n<p>Legal tender coins or medallions typically minted in gold or silver. Issued to commemorate specific themes, events, places, or people and tend to be collectible (see numismatics)<\/p>\n<h4>Commodity Pool<\/h4>\n<p>A venture (typically a limited partnership) where investors will contribute funds into a <strong>pool<\/strong> used to <strong>buy commodities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Consignment Stocks<\/h4>\n<p>A bullion dealer can hold gold on consignment <strong>at their client&#8217;s premises<\/strong>. The gold will be the dealer&#8217;s property until the client withdraws it and pays the prevailing price. Similarly, the metal can be held by the dealer at a <strong>local bank<\/strong> until the client purchases.<\/p>\n<h4>Contango<\/h4>\n<p>The difference between a forward price and a nearby price w<strong>hen the forward price exceeds the nearby price<\/strong>. This is the typical case with gold and should there be no constraint along the supply line, the contango will reflects current interest rates and storage fees.<\/p>\n<h4>Correction<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>fall<\/strong> in market prices after a sustained period of <strong>price rises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Cover<\/h4>\n<p>A term used for the <strong>offsetting<\/strong> of a short futures or options position.<br \/>\n<div class=\"divider top-of-page\"><a href=\"#top\" title=\"Top of Page\">Back to Top<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>D<\/h2>\n<h4>Derivative<\/h4>\n<p>A financial instrument <strong>derived<\/strong> from a cash market commodity, futures contract, or other type of financial instrument.  <\/p>\n<h4>Deferred Settlement<\/h4>\n<p>Where the settlement of a market contract is deferred by <strong>mutual agreement<\/strong> on a <strong>daily basis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Delivery<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>transfer of an asset<\/strong> from the seller to the buyer. Delivery doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean physical shipment and can be a paper or digital transaction paper with the physical asset, eg gold bullion, remaining in a specified secure location.<\/p>\n<h4>Delta<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>proportion<\/strong> by which a option&#8217;s price changes <strong>in response<\/strong> to a change of the underlying asset&#8217;s price. Delta measures sensitivity of an option&#8217;s price to any changes in the asset&#8217;s price.<\/p>\n<h4>Delta hedging<\/h4>\n<p>Metal bought (sold) by the grantor of a call (put) to cover potential risk. <strong>The more the price<\/strong> (of the underlying asset)<strong> moves<\/strong> either way, <strong>the higher the risk<\/strong> to the opposing party that the option could be exercised <strong>against them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Diversification<\/h4>\n<p>The spreading of investments among <strong>differing types<\/strong> of assets, commodities and securities in a bid to <strong>minimize risk<\/strong> in any situation.<\/p>\n<h4>Dor\u00e9<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>gold-silver alloy<\/strong> which is an intermediate product in the extraction of gold from certain mines.<\/p>\n<h4>Double Eagles<\/h4>\n<p>Popular investment U.S. coins issued between 1850-1933.
